Breaking news: To see IbnSina Robot and other videos press here - vid1 vid2 vid3 The Interactive Robots and Media Laboratory (IRML) was founded in September 2007 and is situated in the College of IT of the United Arab Emirates University - the oldest, largest, and most prestigious university of the Emirates, which has been ranked second in the Arab World in terms of research output. IRML is located in the main UAEU campus, which is in Al Ain - a beautiful oasis resort city just an hour away from either Dubai or Abu Dhabi. The founder and director of the lab is Dr. Nikolaos Mavridis , who had been awarded his PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) Media Laboratory. The lab currently has more than 5 faculty members affiliated with it, more than 15 UAE students taking part in its projects, as well as international interns. There are also numerous open possibiities for faculty, postdocs, visiting or permanent graduate students, as well as internships. The lab is equiped with the latest cutting-edge technology robotic, sensing, and virtual world systems. Two major research projects are taking place at the lab: The Microsoft-awarded "Facebots" project, in which social robots with face recognition and dialogue system capabilities that can utilize information available in FaceBook are created, as well as the first arabic speaking humanoid robot project "IbnSina", to become part of an interactive theater facility hosting humans, robots, and virtual characters. International Summer School 2009 |
|
The Interactive Robots and Media Lab of the UAEU, home of the Microsoft-chosen "FaceBots" social robotics project, as well as "IbnSina", the world's first arabic speaking humanoid, is organizing its second international summer school, which wil take place in 2009 between July 5 and July 31 (four weeks). The summer-school will be mini-project based, with multiple teams of 2-3 students, and selected lectures will also take place.
There will be free accomodation as well as a stipend for a limited number of applicants with excellent qualifications. Applicants can be at postdoc, graduate, and also undergraduate level. Excursions to local attractions (Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Fujeirah etc) will take place in the weekends, as well as tours of the region's numerous spectacular sights.

Innovations in IT '07 Conference took place on 18-20 of November in Dubai Mina Salaam Hotel. Albert Hubo (the famous Humanoid with the head of Albert Einstein) also attended (and participated!) in the conference and the special humanoid robotics session organized by the IRML. Numerous leading figures of the field of humanoid robotics participated and enjoyed the Emirates, Dubai, Al Ain, and our university. |
